In recent years, regional institutions in West Africa and their funders have come to recognize the role local food storage systems can play in food security and market regulation. ECOWAS’s storage strategy explicitly recommends providing support for local storage, considered the first line of defence in a food crisis, as well as building up the capacity of farmers’ organizations (FOs) to collect, store and market with a view to stabilising the market.
